These blue jean whales were handmade by women who use to work in a brothel in Port de Paix, Haiti. Earning an excellent, livable wage making these whales has provided an opportunity for the women to leave the brothel and create a better life for themselves.

Using recycled blue jeans, the ladies press the denim with a charcoal iron and use a foot-pump sewing machine (as well as hand-stitching) due to a lack of electricity available. The whales are then stuffed with scraps of recycled clothing and polyfill, giving them a huggable feel. A tiny scoop of pea gravel added to the inside of the whale's chest helps him to sit flat while he's not being played with. Your kids will love it ... but lets face it, adults do too!

The whales are appoximately 12 inches long, and can be machine washed, though hand washing is recommended. Because every pair of blue jeans is different in shade, no two whales are exactly alike. Each one has his own distinct personality :) Your whale will come with a tag signed by the woman who lovingly created it.
